Swimming Level Descriptions
Level I: Water Exploration (Age 4-5) The objective of Level I is to help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. In Level I, you teach elementary aquatic skills, which students build on as they progress through the Learn to Swim program. At this level your students also start developing good attitudes and safe practices around the water. There are no prerequisites for this course.
Level 2: Primary Skills (Ages 5 and up) The objective of Level 2 is to give students success with fundamental skills. Students learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills and adds to the self-help and basic rescue skills begun in Level I. Students entering this course must have a Level I certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in Level I.
Level 3: Stroke Readiness (Ages 5 and up) The objective of Level 3 is to build on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice. You teach students to coordinate the front crawl and back crawl. You introduce the elementary backstroke and the fundamentals of treading water. Students should also learn rules for safe diving and begin to learn to dive from the side of the pool (if the water is deep enough). As in all levels, you present additional safety skills. tudents entering this course must have a Level 2 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in Level 2.
Level 4: Stroke Development (Ages 5 and up) The objective of Level 4 is to develop confidence in the strokes learned thus far and to improve other aquatic skills. You help students increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes (elementary backstroke, front crawl, and back crawl) for greater distances than at Level 3. You introduce the breaststroke and sidestroke and basics of turning at a wall.Students entering this course must have a Level 3 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in Level 3.
Level 5: Refinement (Ages 5 and up) The objective of Level 5 is coordination and refinement of key strokes. You introduce the butterfly, open turns, the feet-first surface dive, and springboard diving (if the water is deep enough). Participants learn to perform the front crawl and back crawl for increased distances and to perform the sidestroke and breaststroke.Students entering this course must have a Level 4 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the course requirements in Level 4.
If you feel your child is above this swimming ability and would like to continue swimming – we highly recommend getting involved in the Hammerhead Swim Club!
